 RELOAD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

"IT'S MY TIME NOW."

CONNOR STEVENS

Connor Stevens is having the time of his life right now. The new up and coming teen has just released his first album at the age of just 19! The talk and rumours about this kid have been crazy! Everyone would love to know what it would be like to be Mr. Stevens at this point in his career. Yes we said it … career! Connor Stevens has got that fresh new vibe about him that we need in the music industry. "With all these 'new' artists coming out, I want to be that guy who stands out from the rest. I want to be that guy who puts soul and meaning into his music that can really touch the public." You heard it here first! Connor is ready to take on the battle of becoming a huge hit in the music industry. We went to catch up with him in his very own recording studio on the streets of London to find out more about his upbringing. We arrive at Blanchard Records in London's Kings Cross. Stevens is looking stylish and urban displaying those Puma suede’s, some tight fitted light jeans and a standard printed t-shirt, sitting in the studio with an early morning drink.

Stevens’s first single ‘Broken Promises’ wasn’t a massive success, however he certainly made up for it with his second single ‘Explanation’. Now he has an album out! Which has already been a massive success selling over one million copies in the first few days of release. "This album means a lot to me as it's how my career got started. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given including some luck upon the way, but I am hoping now that I can make the most of what I've got." The well-spoken 19-year-old is not your typical rapper; some compare young Connor Stevens to a very successful artist that we all know very well here at RELOAD magazine who goes by the name of Professor Green. A lot of similarities can be made between the two, not the best upbringings, made it on their own, same dress sense, and both very well spoken.

In his journey to get to where his is now, Stevens has had some help from a few artists that have also featured in our magazine. You may know of Devlin who is also quite young at the age of 22, has only recently in the last year has made it as very famous recording artists. The two were have supposed to have competed in rap battles before and then went onto becoming close friends, each sharing their passion for music. "I've known James (James Devlin) for a long time now, back in the day we used to kick back and cotch, sharing our interest in music. We didn't live that close to each other actually, but you could say that music brought us together." Connor spins around in his chair with a surprised look on his chiseled face. I asked him what he had been up to recently? Well, obviously you know about my album that's just been released, everything has just been based around the album itself. I made a promise to myself that by the end of this year I would of release my first album and I have, so yeah it's been a really busy year but it has definitely been worthwhile.

What do you mean by that? Would you say your life has changed now that you are an established artist? I suppose you could say I get a lot of publicity now that people know who I am, I've made a name for myself and I want people to listen to my music, it's not all about the parties, the money, the girls… I could go on (laughs), but in all seriousness I make music because I love doing it and I want to express myself through my music and hopefully people take a liking to it. Well it seems your music is growing on people after your first single, tell us about the name of the album, what's the meaning behind it? Yeah that single didn’t do as well as I hoped it would but I was proud of my second single, that was a success. The meaning behind Venture is my journey to where I am now and how I've done it. The word venture actually means something like a dangerous or risky journey and this is relatable to me as I had to risk a lot of things in order to become who I am today, some things I can not mention, the tracks on the back of the album are sort of like a chronological journey of my life and yeah you could say it has been dangerous, I have crossed a lot of paths to benefit myself and the music and I have made a lot of enemies mainly from shutting people down in the rap battles back in the day. (Laughs)

Sounds like you used to get into a lot of trouble, did you ever try and release any other type of album or tracks that you had recorded yourself? I would say that, but I wasn’t exactly the perfect little boy a parent would hope for. And no, I've never actually released anything to be sold, obviously I've recorded a few tracks of my own but that was only to listen back to what I had done and improve it. Now that I've got the right help in the promotional side of things, I think you could be hearing a lot more of me. I look forward to it, tell us about your upbringing, what sort of background did you grown up in? My background was very poor, I came from the rough end of London, that shit hole called Hackney, to be fair Hackney has taught me a lot about the world and introduced me to my limits in life, thanks to my childhood I've experienced both scales of the world, the scum and the scum, I'd like to think I'm somewhere in the middle. I grew up with a lot of bad influences as a kid, I didn't do well in school at all, didn't really have the right help. I still keep in contact with a lot of people that I grew up with some have done really well for themselves and some I keep in contact with simply for the links, if you know what I mean. What about your family you don't seem to mention them a lot? I like to keep my family to myself and close friends, let's just say I was very independent as a child. You say you didn't do well in school, how have you grown up speaking like you are from Chelsea? (laughs) I was never one of those dumb kids in school that didn't have clue what time of the day it was, I just wasn’t that interested in school and didn’t go that often. I was always focusing on my music and hanging out with others that took an interest in music as well. I did move areas for a short space of time due to personal reasons and went to live with my Uncle who was brought up very well. I suppose he was very influential, he always corrected me with how I spoke to people and to this day he has taught me most of my general knowledge.

Who has been your inspiration and influence to make you want to evolve into the rap industry? I grew up worshiping people like Eminem, Biggie Smalls and Tupac. The way that they presented their lyrics were so real and meaningful, none of the crap you see today where people rap about random stuff just to make money. If I could wish for anything, it would to be as successful as Eminem or Tupac and I don't mean successful as in money, I mean successful as in being so lyrically capable to express your feelings onto a piece of paper or onto your phone and produce music from it like that! (Snaps fingers).

Tinie Tempah said he likes your music and says you are what we should be introducing in today’s music. Have you called him for any advice? He said that? Wow, I mean comments like that just make me realize why I want to produce music, it's so beneficial and I love what I am doing at the moment. I haven't called him no, if someone could arrange a meeting with him I would love to go and chat with him. I rate his music, he is a great artist, he puts so much energy and life into his music, which it gets you buzzing when you listen to his lyrics. What will be seeing of you in the next year? I’ve got a few surprises up my sleeve that you’ll definitely enjoy. You will be hearing a lot more from me, that's for sure! It’s my time now! What do you mean by surprises? Well, all I can say right now is tune into BBC Radio 1 on 25th of Feb, you won’t be disappointed.

Double Page Spread Possible Photos

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD POSSIBLE PHOTOS

I have taken some more photos of my model from my front cover in different positions, gestures and styles as I want my double page spread picture to be totally different from my front cover photo. I have simply put the best four into photoshop and put them into the size that my double page spread will be. I have placed the images to the side as I wouldn't want them in the middle to avoid the crease down the centre of the page. The first two images would need to take up one side of the page and have the text on the opposite side. However the second to last photo could be blended into the page and have the text wrapped around it.

This is my second flat plan for my contents page that I created on Microsoft Word, It is simply a quick and effective way of presenting ideas into a visual plan. This helps me gather ideas on how I want the layout to be for my contents page. I have changed a lot of things since my first flat plan and this one, such as the size of the main photo, including more pictures, the title at the top and other features.

Contents Page Analysis

Contents Analysis

House Style/ Brand Identity

When looking at various magazines, I have discovered that quite a lot of music magazines differ from the front page to the contents page and although it is common to use the same model on the front page and the contents page, however quite a lot of magazines use totally different models and I think this is to do with showing a varied range in features inside the magazine instead of seeing the same person on the first two pages. Most magazines also change the layout and background on the contents page as well as their style and genre from the images on the contents page.

As you can see above, NME has used an orange background on the front cover and then used a white background for the contents page. Other features change as well such as the the use of red on the contents page as there is no red at all on the front cover. In contrast to NME, Q has a much more unified house style as the front cover and contents page look very similar in terms of colour coordination, the use of background and font colours. Below you can see that the front cover of Q have used the model 'Brandon Flowers' but have not mentioned him on the contents page which helps give me a better understanding of the ideas I can incorporate into my contents page. I could either use the same model on the front cover and contents as a lot of magazines do this, or I could use different models like a lot of other magazines do and not even mention the featuring artist of the magazine in the contents.

The contents of the contents page use pull quotes to give the reader an idea of the story. For example one of the pull quotes for page 38 is 'When I was young, people used to mistake me for a girl" the reader may see this as an intriguing topic and want to read on, so when constructing my contents page I will need to display eye catching pull quotes to invite the reader in. The subscription box in the bottom right hand corner of the contents page is an element I would incorporate into my magazine as I feel it is an important feature to have on the contents page and it gives a variety in features on the page.

There is a unified house style achieved with both of these magazines and when making my contents page I need to be sure to achieve a unified house style. A house style is the presentation and layout of a magazine which is original to that company. Q achieves this very effectively as you could immediately tell it was part of the same magazine. The same white background with red and black writing has been used on both the front cover and the contents page. Also the same fonts are used as you can see from the cover lines on the front such as 'BREAKING BAD' and "CONTENTS' on the contents page. When making my contents page I will be sure to use the same fonts and colours as the front page to achieve this unified house style. Using a unified house style gives the magazine an overall brand identity which is important in the magazine industry as each magazine should be recognized with a certain individual feature that separates it from other magazines. In this case, Q Magazine has the red square with white writing which no other magazine has. In my magazine I have the reloading sign as part of the title of my magazine which gives it a unique feature that no other music magazine has.

The house style from the front cover to contents of DJ Magazine is clearly unified as they use an effective design element of smiley faces on both pages to ensure that they are easily identified as the same magazine. Also the use of a white background is used to keep the same style throughout both pages. Although there is no red text used on the contents page the same black and white font is used to represent the brand identity of the magazine. There is a lot of free space on both pages of the magazine so you can see the white dominates the page. The layout of the front cover and contents page is simple but effective as the spaces are clearly laid out so the text and images can easily be seen.

There is a clear link between cover lines on DJ Magazine from the front cover to the contents page. On the front cover there is a heading saying "Reasons to be cheerful" which is displayed in a large font as a main feature on the front of the magazine. It is then displayed on the contents page informing the reader of what it is about and the page number it's on.

There is a clear unified house style and brand identity in through the front cover and contents page of Rocksound magazine. The use of yellow is strong on both pages as it is used for the background on the front cover and the yellow boxes on the contents page. The same band/group is used on both pages which makes it easier to identify that they are part of the same magazine. The way the images are cut out are followed through onto the contents page as they are not fully cut out leaving a white border around the image. The same fonts are used on both pages in different styles and sizes such as "Don't panic" and "All Time Low" on the front cover and "All Your Favourite Bands" on the contents page. There are also a lot of design elements on both pages of Rocksound using small circles and other shapes to be the base for some text to go over the top. This is something I may include in my contents page. All of these features that are incorporated from the front cover to the contents page are what makes the brand identity of the magazine.

Layout

When constructing my contents page I want my layout to be clear and well aligned with not much space left on the page. I will be following the style of Q magazine that I did a contents analysis on however I am planning to have more pictures on my contents page instead of one large image. I have been looking at the design elements on the contents pages above and there are a lot of shapes and borders used to give the contents page an individual look.

I will be using headers with the colours from my front cover to represent the brand identity and house style. When I have put the images onto the contents then I will need to insert a white box over the image to put the pull quote over it. The title at the top is an effective feature to have with a header behind it. The layout of these three magazines is aligned with rectangular and square borders and boxes to separate different elements on the page.

Contents of Contents Pages

The layout of the features is similar to how I am going to construct my contents features and the features include announcements, headings and news headlines. In Q Magazine they display the main headline and then have a brief description of what the story is about. They makes the headlines a bigger font so it is clear what the main topic is. The font and size of the page number is the same as the main headline but in a different colour so it stand out from the rest of the text. The contents include names of artists and famous icons that may stand out to readers and interest them in reading that particular page such as 'Charlie Watts' on page 40 and 'Paul Heaton' on page 70.

Page Amounts

Online Graphing

Here I have created a 3D Bar Chart to represent how many pages each magazine has. All of the magazines are monthly editions apart from NME which is weekly as you can tell because it has far less page numbers than the other three magazines. When deciding on how many pages I want in my magazine I would like it to range around 100-115 which is lower than Q, Rocksound and DJ Mag but I feel over that amount is maybe too much. I found on average that the average monthly magazine ranges from 130-170 pages.

Relatable Contents Page Analysis

Relatable Contents Page Analysis

I have titled this 'Relatable Contents Analysis' as I wanted to do an analysis of a magazine that I feel fits the genre and style of how I want my magazine to look like. I chose this edition of Q magazine to get a rough idea of what a contents page consists of and the key features that it should include. It has a very clear layout using different sized rectangular and square boxes to outline the text and images. I wanted to get a feel for the types of layout used in this contents page and the key features in the house style

Contents Page Layout

CONTENTS PAGE FLAT PLAN LAYOUT

Following on from my contents page research I have decided to lay my contents page out in this style after researching various magazine house styles. This is the flat plan layout for my contents page. I aim to have the title as I do on my front cover with a heading underneath saying 'THIS WEEK' to show what is inside this weeks edition. In the top left hand corner I will have the name of my main artist featuring in my magazine which is Connor Stevens and I will have the page number below his name in a large font so it stands out. I will then have the features in the column on the left. Featuring I will have the page numbers of what is inside the magazine. You will notice there are question marks next to the pictures in the featuring box, these are there because I am not sure whether to have pictures in the features yet, however I will decide when constructing my contents page as I will be able to identify what works better. I will then have the main photo dominating the page being a very large picture taking up a lot of the page.

Contents Page Ideas

Contents Page Ideas- Possible Layouts

I have chosen these two images to see what it would roughly look like using these images on my contents page. I am simply playing around with images and the layout of the cover lines to get an idea of the presentation I wish to achieve on my contents page. In the future I will have to make a decision on which one of my photos to use as a final decision, however for the time being I just put some rough cover lines to imagine where everything would be positioned on the contents page. I would aim to have the word 'Contents' in the top black box. Then either some text in the middle black box or a small image. Then the features of the magazine in the bottom black box.

Improved and Final Front Cover

Final Front Cover

Now that I have seen what I need to improve on I went back to my first draft of my front cover on Photoshop and added in the features that were mentioned in my audience feedback. Below is my final draft of my front cover with the improved features from my feedback. I have added in different fonts and sizes, made the date bigger, made headlines clearer and put more cover lines in. Also I have made the image size bigger after looking at the other magazines I have been researching which most have the models from the torso and above.

Audience Feedback on Front Cover

Audience Feedback on Front Cover

For my audience feedback on my front cover I left small sheets of paper by my first draft of my front cover so people could write on the paper what they liked and disliked about it. Below are the pieces of paper and the main targets I am going to focus on putting into improving my front cover.

Here are the main points I need to focus on when improving my front cover:

  • "More variety of fonts need to be used"
  • "Wider variety in sizes of fonts"
  • "Could make the date bigger"
  • "There is a bit more space on the bottom right, could add more cover lines"
  • "Fonts look very simple"
  • "The headlines need to be bigger"
  • "Make it clearer who is the main person featuring in the magazine"

Finished Front Cover

1ST DRAFT FRONT COVER

This is my first draft of my front cover. I will be getting feedback on what to improve from my target audience and then I will be updating my front cover taking the advice from my feedback and adding improvements.
